Lying on the loch of its namesake on the West Highland coast, Lochcarron is a peaceful escape with serene natural beauty, outdoor activities and authentic Highland charm.
With wildlife spotting, artisanal producers and craftsmen, and raw natural beauty, Lochcarron offers something for everyone.
Lochcarron is small, with a population of less than a thousand people which means that tourists often overlook this village.
Given that Lochcarron isn’t at the top of the list for tourists coming to the Highlands, its undiscovered charm retains a sense of authenticity that feels lost in larger towns and cities.
Lochcarron might just be the perfect, tranquil base when exploring wider Ross and Cromarty, and the western part of the Highlands. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights:
Calum’s Seal Trips

One of the best ways to experience the amazing wildlife across Lochcarron is with Calum’s Seal Trips. Calum and his team are engaging, informative and entertaining.
Given the name of his operation, it’s no surprise that seals are spotted in abundance on these boat trips. Your guides might even convince you to sing to the seals and seeing the adorable little sea creatures swim up along the boat is an epic experience.
It’s not just seals though, seabirds and even dolphins are seen on these trips and it’s a perfect day out for those looking to learn more about nature across this amazing sea loch and coastline.

Lochcarron Weavers Heritage Shop

A visit to Lochcarron presents a good excuse to get a glimpse of local craftsmanship. Head to Lochcarron Weavers School for an impressive range of premium Scottish textiles such as scarves, blankets, and woolen goods all locally made.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff are all too happy to explain the history of weaving tradition in the area and visitors talk excitedly about the shop being a wonderful place to pick up authentic souvenirs.

Lochcarron Golf Club

Another Highland town, another great golf course. Sure, Lochcarron Golf Club isn’t exactly Gleneagles, but this is a 9-hole golf course perfect for the more casual golfer. Offering phenomenal views over the loch and surrounding hills, Lochcarron is a great place to have a round of the game invented in Scotland.
Lochcarron Golf Club is great value for money with a 9-hole ticket costing just £15. You’d be lucky if you could get a round in for ten times that amount at the famous Highland clubs!

Attadale Gardens

Located just a short drive from the village of Lochcarron, Attadale Gardens is a peaceful and pretty destination, perfect for garden lovers. Attadale Gardens was even voted as RHS Partner Garden of the Year Regional Winner, Scotland 2023.
The expansive grounds here host a wide variety of plants and flowers with impressive sculptures dotted throughout the gardens. Upon arrival, an audio tour of the gardens can be activated via your mobile phone.
Trails meander throughout the grounds with stunning views of the loch and surrounding mountains with one recent visitor describing the gardens as a “peaceful oasis”. Ticket prices are currently £10 for adults with children under the age of 15 permitted free entry. Dogs kept on a lead are also welcome.

Strome Castle

A few miles from Lochcarron, Strome Castle is perched on a hill and overlooks the amazing landscape of Lochcarron and the surrounding area. Strome Castle is first recorded in 1472 as a stronghold of the Lord of the Isles. In 1503 its reduction was undertaken by the Earl of Huntly to whose family it was granted by Queen Mary in 1546. It was blown up by Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Lord Kintail, about 1602, after a siege
An iconic landmark with a rich history, much of Strome Castle is now ruins of a once mighty structure. Ruinous it may be, but many locals love walking to and from the castle with it being one of the most scenic spots in the area.
