The Best Things to Do in Aviemore

Constantly battling it out with Fort William to lay claim as the adventure capital of Scotland, Aviemore is a bustling small town in the Cairngorms that’s a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, skiers, and those looking to get a slice of this great part of the Highlands.

Whatever time of year you arrive at Aviemore, you’re in for a treat! There’s an abundance of things to do, it’s a friendly, sociable town, and there are excellent places to eat after a long hard day of being out in the elements.

Without further ado, here are some highlights of this great Highland gem:

Explore Cairngorms National Park

Aviemore is the gateway to the Cairngorms National Park, one of the UK’s largest and arguably the most beautiful. Across this great national park are diverse landscapes, rugged terrain, and sparkling lovely lochs.

We could probably write a whole article about the national park itself, but here are some highlights:

  • Hiking – an abundance of trails to sort all levels and appetites, with Cairn Gorm mountain itself being a big draw.
  • Wildlife Spotting – red squirrels, golden eagles, red grouse, and even reindeer, this is one of the best places in all of the UK to spot iconic wildlife.
  • Loch Morlich – a freshwater loch with a stunning beach, walking trails, and a range of water activities

Hit the Slopes at Cairngorm Mountain

Just 10 miles from the popular mountain town of Aviemore, Cairngorm Mountain is Scotland’s most popular ski centre and has been operating for more than 60 years.

The Scottish weather is always unpredictable and that extends to the snow conditions too. That said, when conditions are right, Cairngorm Mountain is a ski centre as good as anywhere and the resort offers 30 km worth of runs, with 13 lifts and a freestyle park.

And after a day on the mountain, be sure to warm up and enjoy the excellent après-ski pubs and restaurants in Aviemore town. With cosy fires, hearty Scottish fare, and plenty of local whisky on offer, it’s the perfect way to round off an unforgettable day on the slopes.

Mountain Biking

As the snow recedes from the hills of Cairngorm Mountain ski resort, the locals swap their skis for mountain bikes.

Come in the late Spring or early summer and Cairngorm Mountain is transformed into a world-class mountain biking destination.

Opened in 2023, the Cairngorm Mountain Bike Park has been described as one of the most important bike developments in the UK. The park offers conveyor uplifts making it an ideal spot for riders of all levels and ages.

Grab a Pint at The Cairngorm Brewery

All that hiking, skiing, and biking makes for thirsty work. Why not head to The Cairngorm Brewery?

Located in Dalfaber Industrial Estate, Cairngorm Brewery has won numerous awards for its cask and keg ales.

The brewery has a bottle shop and tap room open to the public where paddles of their local Highland brews can be sampled.

Head to Highland Wildlife Park

To see some exotic animals that you won’t just see rambling the hills, head to Highland Wildlife Park.

The park is a haven for animal lovers and features native wildcats and even polar bears!

For a proper immersive experience, visitors can undertake a drive-through safari where they’ll come across bison, wolves, and red deer to name a few stars of the show.

Zip Away at Aviemore Kart Raceway

Think you’re the next Lewis Hamilton? Aviemore Kart Raceway makes for an exhilarating day out and offers both family bookings with 120cc, 200cc, and tandem karts and adult-only bookings where you can race in 270 cc karts.

The raceway’s track is 550 meters long and 6 meters wide, incorporating sweeping bends and long straights for an action-packed experience.

Make sure you keep your eyes on the road though, those Cairngorm mountains in the background can be hard not to look at!
