A thriving coastal town on the west coast of the Highlands, Oban is often referred to as “The Gateway To The Isles”.
With incredible scenery, rich history and Highland vibes, Oban is a great destination for tourists to base themselves when exploring the Western Highlands and Islands.
Here are 7 of the best things to do when in Oban:
Oban Distillery

Despite being one of the smallest Scotch distilleries in the country, Oban Distillery is one of the most popular attractions in the town and with good reason:
Located in the heart of Oban town, Oban Distillery offers a variety of tours from the Oban Distillery Tour which provides a complete tour and tasting, to the Exclusive Oban Tour & Tasting where visitors can have an in-depth look at the different stages of scotch whisky production and a sneak peek inside the warehouse and sample a dram straight from the casks.
McCaig’s Tower

Overlooking Oban’s town and the confluence of Loch Linnhe and the Sound of Mull, McCaig’s Tower is an unfinished replica of Rome’s Colosseum.
Commissioned by a philanthropist to employ local stonemasons during times of economic hardship, only the exterior walls of this central tower were ever completed.
There’s no doubt though that the dark stonework of this Scottish-seum blends in beautifully with the surrounding area and a walk up to Battery Hill to admire the Tower and its viewpoint is well worth a gander.
Take a Ferry to the Isle of Mull

As Oban is the gateway to some of the islands, it would be rude not to board a ferry and get a slice of immaculate beaches and extraordinary wildlife.
In just 46 minutes, visitors can board a ferry from Oban, appreciate the majestic waters and reach the Isle of Mull.
Mull is the fourth largest island in all of Scotland and many are saying this is the place to be now that Skye has become so popular in recent years.
The short distance means that the ferry to Mull can make for the perfect day trip, or as a springboard to island-hop across the Hebrides.
The Oban Chocolate Company

After a calf-burning walk up to Battery Hill to see McCaig’s Tower, you’ll probably deserve a treat.
Head down to Corran Esplanade for a meander and you’ll find yourself drawn to Oban Chocolate Company.
Established by local couple Sewtart and Helen MacKechnie, Oban Chocolate Company does what it says on the tin, offering handmade chocolates as well as a cafe for indulgent hot chocolate on a dreary day.
Dunollie Castle

Just north of Oban sits Dunollie Castle. The castle is a ruin now but offers astonishing views over the water and distant isles.
Visitors of all ages can visit the castle and grounds which have a museum, taking them through an exhibition through time on the history of Dunollie Castle, the noble family behind it and what life was like in this part of the world.
Wildlife Cruises

With a rugged coastline and surrounding islands, Oban is a phenomenal place to get out on a boat and spot nature in its natural habitat.
Marine life in particular is found in abundance in these parts where it’s possible to spot dolphins, porpoises, seals and basking sharks to name just a few.
Several tour operators are in service here offering a variety of focused trips:
Spectacular Fresh Seafood

Oban is sometimes referred to as Scotland’s Seafood Capital making this area a must-visit for foodies. The town has award-winning seafood restaurants overlooking Oban Bay, delightful lobster shacks such as Oban Seafood Hut and brilliant hearty pubs such as The Creagan Inn, a short drive from the town.
