Things To Do In Torridon

With its mesmerising hills, majestic lochs, and extraordinary scenery, Torridon is a little big village in the far North of Scotland. Sure, it’s not as famous as Fort William or Aviemore, but Torridon is a gem with great gastronomy, and a mountain of things to do.

Speaking of mountains, the Glens in this part of the world are majestic, and lovers of outdoor pursuits will feel in their element here.

The village of Torridon dates back thousands of years and the historical legacy of the Highlands reverberates all around the area with ruins and heritage in abundance.

Visitors are almost spoilt for choice despite the dainty size of Torridon. Here are some of our favourite things to do in the area:

Kayak on Loch Torridon

Loch Torridon is a focal point of the village and it would be rude not to explore this incredible body of water. The calmness of the water, along with the imposing mountains in the backdrop makes for a world-class paddle.

Be sure to check out the local adventure companies such as Shieldaig Adventures and Torridon Outdoors who offer guided kayak tours allowing you to explore hidden inlets, spot seals, and watch seabirds coming in for their catch of the day.

Hike The Glens of Torridon

You’re spoilt for choice in the Highlands when it comes to mountains to hike and scenic walks. Glens as they’re called in Scotland, dominate the area of Torridon and no visit here would be complete without exploring some of these famous walks.

Liathach is a formidable peak with nervy ridges that will test seasoned pros but the panoramic views offered provide the best reward for taking it on.

Beinn Alligin meanwhile (otherwise known as the Horns of Alligin) is another glen that offers exhilarating scrambles.

As the great Billy Connolly once said, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong jacket.” And he’s not wrong, weather in the Scottish Highlands is predictably unpredictable, so be sure to come prepared with appropriate footwear, warm and waterproof clothing and a map for when your phone undoubtedly loses signal!

Visit Britain’s Oldest Nature Reserve

Known as one of the most incredible mountain ridges in all of Scotland, Beinn Eighe is also Britain’s oldest National Nature Reserve. The ridges have been formed by ancient glaciers which gives the area the nickname of “valley of a hundred hills”.

Geologists will be in their element here where the ancient Caledonian mountain belt has created some of the oldest rock formations in mainland Britain.

For those wanting to find out more about the reserve, a visitor centre opens from April to October just outside Kinlochewe.

Enjoy Fine Dining

Torridon packs a punch despite its small size and eating out is a fine example of this. Speaking of fine, some of the best fine dining in the country can be found here at the Torridon Hotel.

Torridon Hotel actually boasts several restaurants and bars but the crème de la crème of the place is the 1887 Restaurant which is a 3 AA Rosette restaurant, where every dish is designed to be a masterpiece.

The 5-star boutique restaurant is perched on the edge of Loch Torridon and is the perfect locale for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

Stargaze

At night, the area of Torridon becomes an incredible spot for stargazing. With a lack of big cities comes a lack of light pollution meaning that you can see star constellations and even the Milky Way on clear nights!

At The Torridon Hotel, stargazing tours are offered for guests where you can be whisked away to the best spots and be blown away by the raw beauty of the night sky. Perfect for those crisp, winter nights!
